• Born 1967 in Munich, he studied at the Technical University of Munich and the University of Cambridge as a scholar of the German National Scholarship Foundation, focussing on chemistry, biochemistry and molecular biology. Following his Master degree at Cambridge University (M.Phil. Biochem.) he finshed his PhD thesis at the University of Heidelberg and the German Cancer Research Center.
• He began his training in patent law in 1995, was admitted as German patent attorney in 1998, and as European patent attorney in 1999.
